What did the 2010 social media evidence actually measure?

The defensible 2010 picture is rapid, uneven expansion: U.S. survey research showed social-network use broadening beyond younger adults, UK measurement showed Facebook far ahead within its measured web audience, Twitter reported very high message volume, and online video use grew. These figures use different populations and units, so they form a dated evidence set—not one global market total.

The audience was broadening beyond the youngest users

Pew's 2010 analysis found substantial differences by generation while documenting growth among older internet users. It reported that 83% of adults age 33 and younger used social network sites, compared with 50% of Younger Boomers age 46–55, 43% of Older Boomers age 56–64, and 16% of internet users age 74 and older. The report also said the oldest group's measure had risen from 4% in December 2008 to 16% in May 2010. Online video was part of the wider change

Pew's Generations 2010 analysis reported that the share of online adults who had watched video online rose from 52% in May 2008 to 66% in May 2010.
